I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but can we get a bit
quantitative about this?

Based on the comments (yours and others) about the DOF difference
between the 50/1.2 and the 50/1.4, it sounds like a 0.5 stop difference
is not gross enough to see reliably in the viewfinder.  I'm guessing
that means that the 0.5 stop difference between f/4.8 and f/5.6 also is
not gross in the same way?  Is a one stop difference gross enough to
see reliably in the viewfinder (all normal YMMV disclaimers apply)? 
Like f/1.4 versus f/2 or f/5.6 versys f/8?

I don't use the DOF preview that often, because most of my shooting
involves other higher priority criteria (like using a specific shutter
speed).  That means I haven't systematically experimented with using
the DOF preview.
