I've had a number of video cards which didn't support this very
gracefully when running accelerated. (Currently I can't switch at all
once X is running... which is quite frustrating---using a Radeon 9700
pro, which dose nice 3d, but the 2d I've experienced is pathetic.).

I also had trouble recently when trying to use gdm, the fonts on many
applications were extremely small if I used gdm, however everything
looks fine when using startx.
