I agree. My gradparents are running Linux because that's what I set
them up with, and I set their computer up because they couldn't do it
/regardless/ of the operating system. Once the setup task is done
(and done correctly, with the intended user in mind) the useability
issuse becomes a non-issue.
The minority population who can set up a computer are primarily
capable of setting up a windows box because that is what they are used
to. In my experience, the majority of the (general, say U.S.)
population dosen't really care what they use as long as it works, and
these people are often not even capable of changing the screen
resolution, or installing a usb mouse with out detailed
instructions. Having a gui to configure networking isn't going to
make a damed bit of a difference in most cases.
I think the non-computer literate population needs a computer where
_every_ plug is exactly the same ("plug it into the one where it fits"
is a very, very dangerous thing to say), and _everything_ works as
desired when it is plugged in, with zero configuration. OS X seems
the closest to delivering on this, and I think that is only by virtue
of controlling the hardware.
Anyhow, just my $.02.
