apt-get is typically via http or ftp. infact, you can go straight to the repository and download the file(s) from there with your browser.



However, I thought the idea was to build this for newbies. They won't know to do that. Sure, use apt, yum, whatever, but it should also just have plain links to files.


There are nice gui programs like synAPTic that show you which files are available for updating...and you can search for and install new programs as well. Having them download an rpm, tarball, etc would seem like a more difficult way to do this...imo
