I don't know if this helps.  But, I use gtkam to view pictures from my
digital camera.  It works great.  Gives me thumbnails and lets me choose
which pictures I want to download.  

Maybe this user can do the same.  

The app talks directly to the Camera.

I'm using a Kodak 290 with USB.
