Toshiba's are nice...and a pain. I have one that I keep around to open windows specific files. It's an 8100. The CDRom drive has failed on it as well (guess I won't be converting it to linux anytime soon). I also remember having to download a specific display driver for windows to display in other than 800x600 (Yamaha DS-XG Launcher). Surprised me since windows was supposed to have everything. Doubt this helps much, but it sounds like you have a typical old laptop.
