Raymond,
I do have that book, although I confess I haven't done much more than
flip the pages yet... I will start digging in to that ASAP.
I did solve my original problem with a :submit option on the
remote_function. The first combo box value is passed back through the
request.

How might I go about creating related combo boxes, where one has it's
options retrieved (via AJAX) when the other one is changed? I've
looked at a remote_function call on the parent Combo's :onchange, but
it doesn't appear that the parent combo's value is send in the
request...? I need the value in order to send back the proper options
for the child combo box.
Rather than answer directly, let me recommend the book "Ajax in
Action" by Crane, Pascarello, and James.
They go into great depth explaining how to do exactly what you're
asking about. While not totally Rails-specific, the knowledge they lay
down is great. A must-read.
