Hi John, I'm Cc:ing this to the Ruby group. There were a few people at the last meeting that indicated to me that they were interested in how my endeavours to put Debian 3.1 on my laptop would pan out. My ultimate goal is to get the ruby source code, and compile it, and then do some ruby stuff. But first I decided to put Debian 3.1 on my machine.
Well....getting Debian 3.1 to work on my laptap turned out to be er...ah.....rather problematic. Downright difficult! I gave up. I put ubuntu on my machine, and even this "easier" linux distribution is giving me some problems, which I won't go into. I can surf the net, which means I can read from the linux documentation project, linux from scratch, et. al. I had massive amounts of trouble getting my 56k dial up modem to work. My next immediate goal is to get familar with the command line. I already am to a certain extent. Then figure out how to get the source for emacs and ruby, and compile them. This may be easy for some, but I've never done it before. I've got a lot of reading to do, not to mention futzing and putzing, and engaging in false starts. My goal is to get ruby working in linux from the ruby source code. I'm not there yet, but when I am I would like to show up at 2nd and Davis on Tuesday evenings to do some Ruby. So Ruby group, is that a consistent event every Tuesday evening? By the way, I hope I'm not imposing on the collective goodwill of the group by sharing my troubles and tribulations with regard to getting Ruby on Linux on a laptop to work. In fact, I hope I will be looked upon as a mensch in the long run. I've been reading a book entitled The Art of the Start, whose last chapter is entitled The Art of Being a Mensch.
