Erik,

It's unclear what might be causing the connections to your backend
server to fail, but you might try running an actual reverse proxy as
an alternate means of forwarding connections. I've been experimenting
with load-balancing Rails and PHP apps behind OpenBSD systems using
Lighttpd as a proxy server running on the BSD boxes, and it's proven
to be pretty easy to set up.

It also allows proxying and load-balancing of SSL-protected traffic,
since the hostname associated with the certificate can simply be that
of the BSD firewall/proxy system.
