Based on past experience with other users groups back in Texas, it occured to me that maybe pdx.rb should sign up for the user group programs offered by various publishers (I know, for instance, that O'Reilly, Manning and Apress all have these programs). There's no commitment of anything of that nature involved, it's just a way for the publishers to reach out to a sympathetic audience. Among other benefits, they usually will provide free copies of their books in exchange for having them reviewed. The deal is that the review needs to usually follow certain simple guidelines (basically, it can't be a flippant response like: "I read this. It was good," but it doesn't need to be much more than that either).

It's pretty much a win-win deal for the UGs who sign up. However, I looked into it and they all seem to require a group "leader" to be the point of contact. As it seems that pdx.rb follows the general principals of anarchy in the matter, I'm more than willing to fib a bit and just sign us up, but if there's anyone who thinks they would be more suitable for this, please step forward. If there's any sense of opinion that this is a bad idea in general, let me know. If I don't hear anything in the next day or two, I'm going to go ahead and try to sign us up.

Regards,
Thomas
