Way Back When, Robby put me in contact with the person who handles this
stuff for ORA. I looked over the application but never followed up on
it. As I recall, it required us to have a space someplace where the
books they gave us would be stored and things of that nature.
The form for applying asks about that and a few other things we can't check the "yes" box for, but nowhere does it indicate that it's a requirement.
At the time I thought it might not be good/safe to use FreeGeek for that
and couldn't come up with any alternative. Then I got sidetracked and
never dealt with it. If people have a better suggestion about what we
could do for this, please share :)
Well, it is possible that we allow the reviewers to just keep their copies (that's what the Austin Java Group did). However, depending on how the group feels about it, we could also maybe try and start some form of book rotation.
It occured to me that we could add functionality to the catherder app to allow posting of book reviews. We could also add some other management functions for dealing with the book review program in general. Perhaps even a lending system that records which members have which books. Of course, that could also get out of hand quickly.
Also, we'll need to do some managerial things like deciding who gets to review which books and all that. Not the hardest thing to do, of course, but it's also something we want to do in the fairest way possible. Of course, we also don't want to lose our priviledges by having people disappear with books too often.
Also, I'd be happy to finish what I started, but I'd be just as happy if
someone else did. So, Thomas, if you don't want to, I will :D
I'll go ahead and test the waters with O'Reilly and based on that we can look into signing up for a few others if people feel it's a good plan.
