I've thought about this, too. It seems to me that it would have to go through a database that associates design parts (with your own numbering) with distributor/manufacturer parts, instead of adding the distributor number directly to the design. Sometimes it's not in stock in one place but in another, sometimes you have several equally suitable options from the same distributor -- and it would probably not be a good thing to change the information in the design just because that one specified IDC connector is out of stock and you need to buy another one, or the same from a different distributor. I think there are professional systems out there that do exactly this (and a bit more) -- I saw one once, but can't find it now. IIRC the name started with "Parts&...".
