I have had this before, I can usually tell as I have "compact on close"
enabled and it always does it too quickly. If I try it manually it
fails.

However if at that time I moved the .ddb to another PC and tried it, it
would compact it OK. Have you tried that to see if the ddb is OK?

As far as I could tell it was installation related, I tried a
de-installation, even pulling 99SE out by the roots almost from windows.

I never did find the real reason for it, a reinstallation to a different
path helped for a bit, but it was definitely an environment/installation
component issue, not related to the ddb although it may have been
something in the ddb or session that caused it.
