So a software update broke the hardware? Not likely. I suppose you mean the software update screwed something up in the OS, and it's not worth your time to reinstall the OS?

Praise be to MS, for culling the unworthy [machine] from the ranks of the brethren! Praise be to MS, for the salvation of the other 6 brethren from the evils of the Virus!

All joking aside, what will you do about that busted machine? You will buy a new PC, of course. And what OS will it run? A MS OS, of course! So MS just made money by screwing up an older MS product on your existing machine. Wow, I wish I could be in a market like that! I guess I should start telling my customers to whack their existing product with a hammer and then call me up to buy more.

I have a suggestion: see if you can buy that new PC without an OS. Use the OS license and CD from your old PC on the new PC. Take the old PC and install some distro of Linux or BSD on it. This way you can avoid paying more $$$ to MS, be legal, and reclaim your old PC for other uses.

In my office, a computer that is 2-3 years old is considered just broken-in, not broken-down ;-)

I write this on a 4+ year old 1GHz dual-PIII. Still going! This old machine has dual video card (Matrox G450), but I don't use the 2nd output. Due to scopes and other test equipment, there is not enough desk space for 2 monitors, alas.

thanks all
$600 is out of my reach for a video card

my local white box supplier found something from nvidia for about $180
with dual DVI outputs, i guess i will do that and tell you how it works

BTW & OT
after the recent WIN2K virus scare
i patched all by boxes (7) to the latest SP's from MS

most were at SP2 and the process was very tedious with up to 6 download and reboot cycles to get it all done

at the end of the process one of the machines morphed itself into a doorstop - this is what was driving this quest

oh well, it was more than 2-3 yrs old
