Trent,

Yes, you can manually defeat the solder mask. Better still, you might
want to consider creating a component caled "keyboardPad or something to
that affect, which of course will define the copper geometry you are
seeking along with the solder mask definition that you desire. This way,
you don't have to screw around with placing traces for each keyboard pad
you place...
