"Legacy" Ivan remembers, that's who! The XT slot (8-bit data bus) was a
short 62-pin edge connector. The AT slot (16-bit data bus) was a long
slot, containing a XT slot as a subset, and adding a 36-pin edge connector
for the extra bus signals.

In a way, it's too bad PC's don't have a truly simple bus anymore. All you
needed to interface to the XT/AT bus was an address decoder and bus
transceiver. You could PEEK and POKE (memory) or IN and OUT (I/O). I'm
glad we have high-bandwidth buses in modern computers, but I wish they
still had 1 or 2 AT slots too. Oh well...

I still have a working 486DX with XT/AT slots and 5.25 in. floppy drive.
It can multi-boot various versions of DOS, and Windows 95. It could
probably boot a stripped down Linux distro, but I don't have time or
inclination to try it. 850MB HDD, 10bT ethernet card, and a bus extender
card. No CD burner, but files can be transferred to a CD over the network.

I also still have a working 286 - well, it worked the last time I turned it
on, which was over 3 years ago! It was my first computer - I've disposed
of a few computers since then, but can't bring myself to throw out my first
computer! You know what they say, "You never forget your first!" ;-)
