The answer to your question, "Would DXP do it better?", is absolutely yes. Altium Designer 6, which is the latest version of DXP, has a feature called database lilbraries. It would seem to be a perfect fit for what you want to do.

You should be aware that upgrading will involve a fairly steep learning curve - much has changed, and there are MANY new features in the latest version of the software.
