Peircers, There are times when Peirce writes in a technical vein and there are times when Peirce writes in a popular vein. He is without question a master of both styles of writing and yet the two veins yield ores of very different grades. If a popular exposition incites a person to look further into a subject then it has done the job it was meant to do, but if it leads a person to imagine that all is said and done on the subject then it becomes a block to inquiry, at least in the mind of the person who so imagines. Peirce's Letters to Lady Welby stand among all of Peirce's most elegant and engaging essays on the theory of signs. Still, they have their approximations, their smoothing over of details where many devils and divinities hide.
