Franklin, List, Still just casting about somewhat randomly for bearings, I know that a big piece of the puzzle has to do with our understanding of analogies, icons, metaphors, similes, simulacra, and their ilk, formal aspects of which are greatly generalized in mathematical category theory under the heading of “arrows”, morphisms, functors, and natural transformations, the whole panoply that Stanislaw Ulam called “Analogies Between Analogies”: http://www.ucpress.edu/op.php?isbn=9780520052901 Analogical reasoning was a hot topic in cognitive science and computational models of scientific inquiry all through the 80s when I was drifting from U to U studying this stuff. Coming to mind there was the work of Dedre Gentner and her group (Gentner and Stevens (eds. 1983) “Mental Models”, Lawrence Erlbaum) and the “HoHoNiTh” group (Holland, Holyoak, Nisbett, and Thagard (1986) “Induction : Processes of Inference, Learning, & Discovery”). Both used aspects of category theory, by those or any other words, and the latter made explicit reference to Peirce. More later, as it comes to mind ...
