I’ve read a couple papers on Peirce’s Objective Idealism. In the appendix of "Peirce's Objective Idealism: A Defense", Claudine Tiercelin mentions that even experts have trouble classifying Peirce as both a realist and an idealist. Without itemizing discussion points (e.g., how determinate is reality, whether there are vague objects, issues of drawing boundaries between mental/physical and between physical/physical, etc.), I’d like to offer an encounter with an ideal natural form (one that we named, but through measurement), and ask whether you think it’s possible (using modern technologies, libraries, through interaction with experts) for a community of inquirers to come to a single, unified, numerical consensus about what phi spiral abduction means at the end of inquiry. That is, whether it is possible for a community of inquirers with genuine doubt to settle on an objective representation about a perceptual judgment; whether production of a single objective representation of a complex, ideal natural form is possible. The context is only about 500um wide and about 150um deep- but connected to the rest of the eye. To get at that question, I used Peircean methods to frame the problem. It exposes some technical, intellectual and political challenges but also provides a more concrete imagination about what factors constitute objective idealism. I would ask that you follow development of that symbol over time and in light of what Peirce says in Awbrey’s link.
