Jeff, List: JD: I find it difficult to see how Jon S's suggestions with respect to the MEG's are supposed to provide an account which treats lines as more general relations and not as lines of identity. After all, it is obvious that some relations are not well captured by lines connecting spots, including the relation of the conditional *de inesse* and the relation between affirmation and negation--which are fundamental to all versions of the EG.
Those particular "relations" are captured in MEGs exactly the same way that they are captured in EGs--by means of Cuts. The conditional *de inesse*, "if A then C," is instead expressed as "not (A and not C)"; and negation itself is expressed by scribing a Graph in the Universe of Falsity (on the *verso*), rather than in the Universe of Truth (on the *recto*). Again, the fundamental difference between MEGs and EGs is that Points for Subjects replace Spots for predicates, while a single Line of Relation for the Continuous Predicate replaces multiple Lines of Identity for different individuals. I agree with Gary F.'s comment a couple of days ago that MEGs are unlikely to *improve *on EGs when it comes to representing and analyzing the *process *of thought by implementing the transformation rules, since those remain essentially unchanged; but that is not their purpose anyway. MEGs are intended primarily to provide a *more Iconic* representation of a Proposition as consisting of (1) multiple Subjects that are (2) "married" by one Continuous Predicate, or "divorced" where there are Cuts. These correspond to (1) the *Indexical *parts that *denote the Object* vs. (2) the *Iconic *parts that *signify the Interpretant*. The former--including any *discrete *predicates, such as "killing"--must *already *be known to the interpreting Quasi-mind from Collateral Experience, while the latter is the *only *information that the Proposition *itself *conveys. With all of that in mind, perhaps Propositional Graphs (PGs) would be a better name than Modified Existential Graphs (MEGs).
