Training programs for lifeboat release mechanism

(19 January, 2005)

The design and construction of lifeboats and their auxiliary equipment, such as hook, hook release equipment and winch brakes, continue to play a significant part in accidents involving lifeboats.

An INTERTANKO/ OCIMF/ SIGTTO report on lifeboat incidents, conducted four years ago, showed that the design and construction of lifeboats and their auxiliary equipment, such as hook and hook release equipment and winch brakes, continue to play a significant part in accidents involving lifeboats. A lifeboat is designed to evacuate personnel from a ship and save lives. It is designed as a "one-way use" piece of equipment rather than for retrieval and re-use. Retrieval of the boat is a secondary factor almost entirely confined to the mechanics of training exercises/drills.

One of the new concepts from Seagull has been to focus for quite a while on the dangers encountered when conducting lifeboat drills onboard vessels. An extensive development program within Seagull will end with 10 to12 different titles of "Lifeboat Release Mechanism" Computer Based Training courses. All the courses are developed in conjunction with the different manufacturer's designs and when combined with practical training, the concept enables the crew onboard to train on the precise equipment that they handle on their specific vessel.

The training programme will consists of many different manufacturers, and the following titles are now ready:

  • CD #130 Lifeboat Release Mechanism IHI GTC
  • CD #131 Lifeboat Release Mechanism Mills Titan
  • CD #132 Lifeboat Release Mechanism Shigi S2
  • CD #133 Lifeboat Release Mechanism Fassmer
  • CD #134 Lifeboat Release Mechanism Harding FF

And the following modules are planned to be available shortly:

  • CD #135 Lifeboat Release Mechanism, Norsafe GES
  • CD #136 Lifeboat Release Mechanism, Norsafe CAMSAFE
  • CD #137 Lifeboat Release Mechanism, Norsafe TORONLOAD

Our client's feedback is always valuable and now never more so, because Seagull will prioritise the further development after your feedback, so if you are interested in this training programme, please do not hesitate to let us know what system is in use within your fleet.

We thank you for your help
