US blacklist hits Indonesian crew

THE Indonesian government is lobbying hard to convince the United States to remove Indonesia from its ‘blacklist’.

The US embassy in Jakarta is believed to have backed the government’s position. The US

blacklist is aimed at ensuring maritime security, but the chairman of the Indonesian Seafarers’ Association, Hanafi Rustandi, told Fairplay that it has jeopardised the jobs of Indonesian seafarers. As many as 18,000 Indonesian seafarers are employed on board ships calling at US ports, Rustandi said.

The government plans to ratify the International Labour Organisation’s convention governing the Seafarers’ Identity Document ‘as soon as possible’. This ratification is aimed at protecting the rights of Indonesian seafarers serving on foreign ships.
