CBT learning package for Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) (16 October, 2006)
The ability to use Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) is a STCW95 requirement for all watch-keepers and this is a challenge for a large numbers of seafarers, who do not have English as their mother tongue. However, seafarers of all nationalities will find these training modules extremely useful and can use them to improve their competence in English. There are narrated scenarios using a variety of English accents and this provides an authentic real-life context for learning. The programme consists of an innovative blend of text, visual and audio in a user-friendly format which provides an easy-learning package to all those who are required to know and use SMCP. The learning package is divided into 2 parts covering the General Guidelines for communication onboard and also focusing on specific aspects of ship operation: Part-1 (CBT# 145 SMCP - Distress, Urgency and Safety) covers the internal and external communication required in cases of Distress, Urgency & Safety etc, including a variety of scenarios such as Fire, Flooding, Sinking, Collision, Grounding and S&R. Part-2 (CBT#146 SMCP Navigation and Cargo Handling) covers a variety of scenarios for communication onboard relating to watch keeping and also the external and internal communications relating to scenarios occurring on various types of specialist ships including: Passenger; Cargo; Bulk; Tankers; Container ships etc Both parts have integrated assessments to evaluate the knowledge gained from the learning experience.
