CBT learning package for Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP)
(16 October, 2006)

The ability to use Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) is a STCW95
requirement for all watch-keepers and this is a challenge for a large
numbers of seafarers, who do not have English as their mother tongue.
However, seafarers of all nationalities will find these training modules
extremely useful and can use them to improve their competence in English.
There are narrated scenarios using a variety of English accents and this
provides an authentic real-life context for learning.

The programme consists of an innovative blend of text, visual and audio in a
user-friendly format which provides an easy-learning package to all those
who are required to know and use SMCP.
The learning package is divided into 2 parts covering the General Guidelines
for communication onboard and also focusing on specific aspects of ship
operation:

Part-1 (CBT# 145 SMCP - Distress, Urgency and Safety) covers the internal
and external communication required in cases of Distress, Urgency & Safety
etc, including a variety of scenarios such as Fire, Flooding, Sinking,
Collision, Grounding and S&R.

Part-2 (CBT#146 SMCP ?Navigation and Cargo Handling) covers a variety of
scenarios for communication onboard relating to watch keeping and also the
external and internal communications relating to scenarios occurring on
various types of specialist ships including: Passenger; Cargo; Bulk;
Tankers; Container ships etc

Both parts have integrated assessments to evaluate the knowledge gained from
the learning experience.

Relevant Legislation/References:
STCW95 - Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons onboard
IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP)
GMDSS

Course Topics include:
Spelling: Alphabet & Numbers
Message Markers
Operational Guidelines
Standard Organisational Phrases
Ambiguous Words
Etc, etc.
