MarAd says calmer seas favour small boats
US VESSELS operators should be on guard for a possible increase in pirate
attacks in the Gulf of Aden as monsoon season ends, government officials have
warned. US VESSELS operators should be on guard for a possible increase in
pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden as monsoon season ends, government officials
have warned.
Calmer seas between October and December will also mean favourable conditions
for small boat activity in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and off the Horn of
Africa, according to a US Maritime Administration alert.
MarAd noted that recent attacks have happened off the Kenyan and Tanzanian
coasts, the Southern Red Sea, Seychelles and Maldives.
"Our agency remains committed to helping US crewmembers be vigilant and
well-prepared for pirate attacks," said MarAd chief David Matsuda.
MarAd said it's working with other federal agencies to reduce the vulnerability
of US ships and crews by issuing advisories directly to US ship operators based
on latest intelligence and conducting voluntary security assessments.
