Stand Up For Your Rights
Readers of our Gangway newsletter will know how seriously we take the issue of
recruiting talented young people into a seagoing career, and of the retention
of those already in the industry. Heck we at Shiptalk Recruitment almost bore
ourselves sometimes, constantly banging on about it.
There are major problems which need to be addressed, you only have to look in
the media and reports abound of incidents of crew members of all nationalities
being criminalised, abandoned, going unpaid, victims of pirate attacks and
other more routine indignities.
While there has always been the International Transport Workers Federation to
help with such career risks, it seems that the onus has to shift away from
Unions and back onto ship owners. Supporting seafarers' legitimate rights has
to be a major focus for employers too.
In response to these challenges a new pan-industry centre has been launched,
"Seafarers Rights International" (SRI) providing soundly researched support and
advice for seafarers. The centre will focus on research, advancing seafarers'
rights and interests and promoting education and training with a focus on legal
issues.
Launched to coincide with World Maritime Day, in the Year of the Seafarer there
was perhaps never a more apt time to cut the ribbon on this unique centre.
The new organisation's strategic direction is set by an advisory board. With
practical outputs that are user-friendly. It will not be purely academic, and
will take pure research and in turn produce tools for practitioners and
seafarers.
The first projects to be tackled include, criminalisation, abandonment and the
role of flag states in respect of their responsibilities towards seafarers'
rights.
If SRI is successful it could make a major contribution to enhancing seafarers'
rights worldwide and help counteract recent negative publicity deterring
potential recruits that are vital to the industry's future. We truly wish the
centre all the very best, and hope to be able to support their work as it
progresses.
