Caterpiller is presently trying to get UAW to accept a two tier wage
structure. A strike is possible. To counter company propaganda UAW is
soliciting support from economists and others by agreeing to sign on to
the ad below. The ad will be placed in papers in Peoria, Decater, Pontiac,
Illinois and York, PA. While I am personally not too happy with the message
in the ad, it is an effort to turn the company line that the two tier wage
system is necessary to be competitive--on its head. In any case, any blow
against this company is important. Thus I am signing the ad and encourage
others to do so. You can do it by sending an e-mail message to Alton Miller.
Just say you authorize the International Union, UAW, to use your name as a sign
er of the statement below. Then give your name and organizational affiliation.
e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here is the text of the ad.

IT'S BAD FOR BUSINESS
The business climate in our communities depends on meaningful, productive
co-operation between management and labor.
If a company as large and important as Caterpiller hires "permanent new
employees" in response to a strike, the result will be tension, division and
hostility. And the company will create lasting scars which can only hurt its
ability to compete in the coming decade.
We appeal to Caterpiller to respect the law, respect the rights of its workers
and settle this dispute as soon as possible.
