Barber's book JIHAD VS. McWORLD is pretty good on this stuff, even though it's about 5 years old. Bush is the militant leader of McWorld (i.e., neoliberal capitalism), trying to deal with the resistance from Jihad (zealous and particularistic ethnic movements). Jihad (e.g., ObL) is a real problem because of the increasing US & Western dependence on imported oil. To Barber, both McWorld and Jihad are anarchic and thus anti-democratic, while they tend to feed on each other, reinforcing each other. His solution is world democracy. Even though he's not totally anti-capitalist, it sure sounds like socialism. JD

At the same time, they propose that globalization is the way to peace. This is of course, by no means, the greatest example of their hypocritical contradictions, but I thought it was one worthy of noting. -- Michael Perelman Economics Department California State University [EMAIL PROTECTED] Chico, CA 95929 530-898-5321 fax 530-898-5901
