I could not trace this reference. I am aware from the Dictionary of Marxist
Thought that there is a problem in changing usage of the term "ideology":
respected marxist writers such as Gramsci and Lucacs wrote about ideology
before Marx's earlier works with a critical and negative use of the term
had been published. I do not know where George Thomson stands in this but I
would be interested to see how he uses the term ideology for pre-class
societies.
