that may be true, but would you then agree with BBC's assessment that it started as an essentially indigenous and popular uprising? if so, that is all the more reason to ask the people. counterinsurgency warfare might be a dirty business (and i doubt you condone it), but it is all the more dirty when the actions are partially aimed at silencing the people or denying them a voice.
--ravi --- I don't know enough about the issue to answer whether it was popular or not. But you do not need to have a majority of the population on your side in order to have an indigenous uprising. The Chechen population, for instance, voted overwhelmingly to remain part of the Russian Federation (then, the Soviet Union) in 1991. That did not prevent extremists in the Chechen population from doing their thing, and the moderates were either forced out or fled.
