The alternative strategy would be to arouse public passion (and participation!). It has long been my own theory that the DP leadership would always choose losing rather than risk such arousal. The Public is a great Beast, and dangerous when aroused. (I think Zinn argues this someplace, but I'm not sure of my memory on this.) Carrol
