Doyle;
I think one can extend that view, to a larger comment. Stress on
people can create depression. The concept of a direct connection
between capitalist inequality though does not stop depression
happening in all societies all the time. Or that mental quote health
unquote reforms can't be done in capitalism.
What is pertinent though is the sense that a variety of cognitions are
poorly served by social relations and stress in an economy of
inequality.
It's my view that depression is normal. Some of the pain of
depression is ok though outlying forms of depression need support and
aid not isolation or denial. The contribution to society of
depression is important in many frames of reference. And that
depression flies in the face of rationalist theories of cognition. In
other words depression enhances creative thought. No amount of
rationalist ability can substitute for what depression brings to
understanding.
Thanks,
Doyle Saylor
