I think one can extend that view, to a larger comment. Stress on people can create depression. The concept of a direct connection between capitalist inequality though does not stop depression happening in all societies all the time. Or that mental quote health unquote reforms can't be done in capitalism.

What is pertinent though is the sense that a variety of cognitions are poorly served by social relations and stress in an economy of inequality.

It's my view that depression is normal. Some of the pain of depression is ok though outlying forms of depression need support and aid not isolation or denial. The contribution to society of depression is important in many frames of reference. And that depression flies in the face of rationalist theories of cognition. In other words depression enhances creative thought. No amount of rationalist ability can substitute for what depression brings to understanding.
