Pacifica? Authoritarian? My god, watching this place for almost 20
years almost makes me feel like Samuel Huntington, ready to mount the
soapbox about an excess of democracy. The place is paralyzed (sorry,
Doyle) by an idiotic governance structure, which has listeners (who
know nothing about the issues or how to run a radio station) and the
staff (with its internal cliques) electing the board. Nothing sensible
can ever get done. The newish executive director of Pacifica, the
smart and energetic Nicole Sawaya, is completely hamstrung by the
national board and the boards of all the local stations. The place
needs a top to bottom overhaul, but with a bunch of activisism types
on the boards, it's just impossible.
The whole fetish of "community" radio needs to be junked. The
"community" is an imaginary thing - and more phantasmic than in
Benedict Anderson's sense. No one can say who this community is, how
members are distinguished from nonmembers, what its interests are.
It's a stupid joke. It's an excuse for amateurism and self-indulgence.
No wonder listeners are dropping like flies.
