Personally I think a merger of the two, to some degree, is warranted. I generally strongly favor 'Third Worldist' versions of Marxism, both politically and in terms of historical political-economic analysis, but Brenner is right to point out that Frank as well as Wallerstein have failed to fully make use of the general conceptual framework of Marx's thought. Frank himself even went so far as to think feudalism and capitalism were useless terms and to basically equate economic success with increased volume of trade, which put him on the wrong track. But as analysis as such goes, I would pick Frank's general line over Brenner's.
