FWIW I remember a debate between him and Wallerstein in the 1980s at Indiana Univ of Pennsylvania or some such combination. I was clearly on Wallerstein's side and I thought Landes, with all due respects, rested his argument on the ability of of capitalism making watches! Wallerstein then would of course echo what Louis P is arguing about the role of colonialism on European capitalism.
