It's bizarre -- to put it gently -- that Louis, who's been active and
adamant at discrediting Ahmadinejad for his domestic policies, his
connection to Islam, etc. feels now oh so insulted because I make a
sharp distinction between Bin Laden's Al Qaida and Chavez's united
socialist party, etc.
Julio,
first, my congratulations to you (and Max) on your man's victory last
night, and I mean that sincerely. I will note though that I was
disturbed by the fact that the first shot across the bow, from Obama,
was at the left, as he started his speech with this warning to those
demanding relief from discrimination:
If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a
place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream
of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power
of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
With regard to your post above, I think you are absolutely right in
differentiating between an attack on Bin Laden and on Hugo Chavez (as
also between Bush and Obama). But aren't you deluding yourself in
thinking that it is Bin Laden and Al Qaeda who will be attacked? As
Carrol points out, it is the people of Afghanistan, who have no oil
reserves to use in some manner against us or to improve their own
lives, who will bear the brunt of any attack. In that sense, we might
as well invert your concern: it is unlikely that we will embark on a
mass indiscriminate attack on Venezuela, whereas we have already been
involved in one against the people of Afghanistan, which Obama has
promised to escalate.
