my friend Ellen will like this (because she laughs at the number of
well-known people I've known, including her), but I knew David in
college. We were both part of the YPSL, the youth group of the
social-democratic Socialist Party, USA, and also of Michael
Harrington's successor group, the Democratic Socialist Organizing
Committee. He knows a lot and a recent e-mail conversation suggests
that he's still a leftist (of some sort -- but who cares which?) He
wrote a book called "Speaking American" (or something like that),
which was originally aimed at helping the left convince the regular
working folks in the non-left to come around to our positions. I guess
he must have fallen for Harrington's line about working with the "left
wing of the possible" and ended up working for Bill Clinton (and also
John Sweeney of the AFL-CIO).
