There is a hidden arrogance in all versions of politics explicitly grounded in "the possible" -- there is an implicit claim to be able to predict the future, to know not only what 'is possible' but what will be 'possible' under all possible conditions. That is the (important) grain of truth in the French '68 slogan, "Be practical, demand the impossible."
