In any case, a really good book on the origins of the Fed is James Livingston's. He makes it clear that the creation of the Fed was one of the foundational acts of the modern American ruling class, giving birth to itself on a national and international scale. The modern corporation and modern stock markets were central to the act, with the Fed at the nexus of both.
