This is true. In the most recent crisis, a hedge fund guy names Ackman
had been shorting the monoline insurers (MBIA, Ambac) well before they
got in trouble. My point is these are not typical. For every prescient
short-seller, there are I'd guess a 100 who pile on after the fact.

Isn't what you are saying almost tautological ?  The majority of
speculators in a bubble couldn't be shorting by definition of a
bubble, no ? A speculative bubble _is_ a whole lot of speculation on
prices rising in something ,or not ?
