this should remind us of the similarity between Italian fascism and the more general phenomenon of European colonialism. After all, the British were pretty bloody in their conquest of Iraq, among other places. Their practice of divide-and-rule still creates problems for us today, as in Israel/Palestine. In some ways the problem that the European "democracies" had with Italian or Spanish fascism was that the latter had entered the game too late (after all, England had _already_ conquered its empire). They were mere parvenus with pretensions of belonging to the club. -- Jim Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti."
