I always liked what Etienne Balibar said, sort of: all national-ismsĀ are laced 
with racism.

Ottoman history before young turkey was anything but nationalistic... But 
Turkic nationalist and ottoman histories are confoundedĀ  to justify imperial 
wars on religious grounds. An upon a closer reading of how ordinary people 
mingled, it was evident that nationality mattered little. There is not 
unfortunately a people's history of the Ottoman empire, but from brief 
encounter with Prof Rabkin, a return to the millet system was a better 
guarantee for minorities.
