Claudia Chaufan, MD, is an Argentine physician and assistant adjunct professor 
in the Institute for Health and Aging and Social and Behavioral Sciences at the 
University of California, San Francisco. She is also vice president of the 
California Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. According to 
its web site, PNHP supports "single-payer national health insurance - a system 
in which a single public or quasi-public agency organizes health financing, but 
delivery of care remains largely private." Dr. Chaufan talks to, and writes 
for, lay and expert audiences on the social dimensions of the diabetes epidemic 
and on single-payer health care reform. This is a recent email interview with 
her.
