Subject: Re: [Pen-l] NYT oped: Obama is the GOP's bitch

More than a few trade union leaders in the US and elsewhere, tougher than
Obama, rose from the ranks with solid reputations as militants, and then became
both seduced and overwhelmed by the power of capital. Lacking any real
committment to and confidence in the capacity of the base to sustain a
struggle, they quickly turned away from it and tried instead to wheedle and
charm petty concessions from their opponents in the new circles in which they
moved. Though hardly a militant, given his past associations and sympathies,
Obama seems to fit that mold and to have followed a similar path. Lest we throw
too many stones, the far left has also experienced its share of defections over
the generations.
