I think Michael nails it. Class war may have been ongoing since the beginning of industrial capitalism, but it seems like what we are seeing now is something new. The rich seem to have abandoned all subtlety and seem to be fighting a very direct, brutal form of warfare. It is really quite astonishing to see.
