For obvious reasons, the New York Times has hyped the role of Gene 
Sharp and his co-thinkers in the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings. 
By placing much more emphasis on the struggle against 
“dictatorship”, all sorts of delicate questions about class 
relations get deemphasized. By making the struggle one against a 
Ben Ali or a Mubarak rather than the capitalist system, the 
newspaper of record hopes to steer things in the direction of 
Corey Aquino “People’s Power” rather than the kind of social 
transformation that would leave American corporations on the 
outside looking in, like a bunch of hungry buzzards.
