The resolution also called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations.
Libya
agreed to a ceasefire but the rebels have not and fighting continues. The
rebels
say that Gadaffi is violating his ceasefire. The whole affair seems a sham to
me. There may be real interest in negotiation on Gadaffi's part but not on the
part of the powers involved in the no fly zone etc. The British, French, and US
all want Gadaffi gone no matter what. Sarkozy is one of the most eager. Gadaffi
wants the money back he spent on Sarkozy's 2007 campaign!
The idea of protecting civilians is weird. It is not as if Gadaffi is
gunning down peaceful protesters. The protesters have taken up arms and are
trying to take over the government. This is war and now the UN has joined on
one
side but those involved do not want to suffer many casualties so they will use
the protesters as proxies to help unseat Gadaffi. Many more Libyans will no
doubt be killed to protect Libyans. Will the west condemn the rebels for not
accepting a cease fire?

  Cheers, ken

Maybe it is a difference without a distinction to you; maybe it is a
difference without a distinction to the French; but it is not a
difference without a distinction to Russia, China, Germany, Brazil,
India, and South Africa, whose support was crucial for achieving
passage of the UN Security Council resolution.
