This portrayal is sad, but very common. The reason why Obama is dubbed "socialist" by right-wingers is because his policies involve statism (and not of the kind that simply gives sops, a.k.a. tax cuts, to serve the short-term interests of businesscritters while protecting capitalist property rights).
