Why would anyone take J. Bradford seriously? Jim, do you know if he ever
published that ill-named book, Slouching toward Utopia, in which he argued that
capitalism was driving us toward a worldwide and universal middle classdom. I
remember him saying, not long after Paul died, that Paul Sweezy was a Stalin
apologist. Then mourning the death of family friend, Jeane Kirkpatrick, she of
the infamous authoritarian/totalitarian distinction. Yes, deLong is a serious
person---a serious red-baiter, a serious apologist for capitalism, and a
serious admirer of scoundrels like Kirkpatrick. To quote Hunter S. Thompson
(who was writing about Hubert Humphrey), deLong "should be stuffed in a bottle
and shipped out on the Japanese current.” I don't know what the economist
equivalent would be to the first part of the quote" "a gutless old ward heeler."
